I purchased this because I wanted a stand alone mist fountain since I don't have much tabletop space in my living room. The fountain makes quite a bit of swirling mist on the high setting, though when placed in a corner, the mist mainly hangs over the bowl. To allow for more movement and optimal visual effect it needs to be placed further from a wall or in an area that doesn't restrict as much air flow.

The mist fountain makes a water trickling sound, soothing though subtle as compared to the regular indoor water fountain variety. Otherwise, the unit itself operates very quietly. More for visual ambience than sound effect. A side bonus is that it seems to work like a vaporizer in dry rooms when the heat is on.
